The First Step: A Generator Bought in Fear
We bought our first generator in 1999—right before our wedding. Like many couples back then, we were spooked by Y2K. The world didn’t collapse on January 1st. But that generator became one of the best purchases we’ve ever made.
During ice storms, it has run for days and even weeks at a time. It has kept food safe, lights on, and kids warm. What started as a fear-based buy turned into a foundation of resilience that has served us for more than two decades.
Cancer and the Pantry That Helped—but Didn’t Save Us
Years later, my wife Carla was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. Doctors gave her four months to live. At the time, we had five children at home.
Our pantry helped stretch groceries. But it wasn’t food storage that carried us. It was people. Friends and neighbors showed up with meals, support, and prayers. That experience taught me preparedness isn’t about stockpiles—it’s about community.
